Getting into employment

Explore work opportunities, practical preparation and the support available to help residents build confidence.

Employment support is shaped around each resident's goals and current support plan. Staff may help residents explore community opportunities and prepare for applications, but SLS does not guarantee a job, placement, funded course or in-house role.

Voluntary employment opportunities

Suitable volunteering can help build routine, confidence and experience. Opportunities depend on the host organisation, role requirements, risk assessment and the resident's interests. Staff can help explore local options where this forms part of the person's goals.

Residents can apply for suitable advertised jobs on the same basis as other applicants. Vacancies, essential criteria, safer-recruitment checks and reasonable adjustments vary by role. There is no standing promise of paid in-house work for residents.

Training and preparation support

Depending on the current programme and agreed support plan, staff may help with CVs, online applications, interview practice or signposting to external employment services. Any funding for courses, travel or interview clothing must be agreed in advance and is not guaranteed by this page.

Benefits of in-house employment

Work and volunteering can support confidence, skills, social connection and independence. The right option will differ for each person, and benefits advice may be useful before starting paid work.

Supportive environment

Speak to your support worker about the practical help included in your plan. For specialist employment advice, staff may signpost to local authority, Jobcentre Plus, Access to Work or voluntary-sector services.

Join us in building futures

Start with your goals, experience, preferred hours and any adjustments you may need. We can then discuss what support is currently available and which external service may be appropriate.
