Accessible homes
Home adaptations
Understand the practical changes that can make a home safer, more comfortable and better suited to individual needs.

Your accommodation, adapted to meet your needs
An adaptation is considered against the person's assessed needs, the property, the legal landlord's responsibilities, funding and any required consent. A request does not mean that every change can be made in every home, so obtain written confirmation before relying on a proposed feature.
Our commitment to accessibility
Some SLS-listed properties may have step-free access or other accessible features. Availability and the route through each building vary, so ask the referrals team for a current accessibility check and arrange a visit before accepting accommodation.
Wheelchair-friendly features
Some accommodation may have a level-access shower, wider circulation space or other wheelchair-related features. These terms are not a technical accessibility guarantee. An occupational therapist or other appropriate professional should confirm suitability for the individual.
Customisation for comfort
Possible changes can include grab rails, minor equipment or assistive technology, but the available option depends on assessment, consent, building constraints and funding. The resident, landlord, care team and relevant professional should agree who will arrange, pay for and maintain an approved adaptation.
Integrated support services
Where included in the person's current support plan and commissioned package, support may include:
- agreed on-site or on-call support hours;
- support planned around assessed needs and goals;
- help to explore suitable social or community activities;
- agreed assistance with daily living or medication.
